Walked around Rottnest island today, all around the perimeter for a total of about 35km. Lots of sun, breeze and Quokkas (a small marsupial of the wallaby family). There are no cars on the island which made for a very pleasant walking experience. There are busses, but the drivers are respectful of cyclists and walkers, although I only met one other walker - most people were on cycles.

Dec 6

Starting from the port area walked out toward the suburbs, 16.56km total. The burbs seem to be an international plague. The bright spot was a cemetery with an award winning architect designed mausoleum - quite a remarkable space. As for the rest - aside from interesting residential architecture the burbs seemed like burbs.

Back at the backpackers, Jimmy Hendrix is playing loudly and there is much shrieking by young women and incomprehensible yelling by young men.

Dec 2 - 5

Not doing as much walking as anticipated. The conference interfered with my walking schedule.

Fremantle has a concentrated core around the waterfront and docks with a large and sprawling suburb. Walking tends to be most attractive along the waterfront and there is much of it, but as is usual with industrial port cities a lot of the waterfront is inaccessible.

However, as a consolation I have been discovering the pleasures of Fremantle's many different craft beers and Margaret River Wine.

Feb 11 - Walked 118.24 km since last post, its been a long time though, almost a month. Been to Calgary every weekend except for a trip to Winnipeg and one weekend home. Walked around the coulee edge thinking about a potential camera obscura. Had a pedometer breakdown & had to estimate distance for a few days. Walking mostly indoors so can't GPS.

Cockatoo Island

November 28 - temperature well below zero and snow on the ground. Walked 100.73 km since last post (minus the unrecorded weekend in NYC, which was at least 40km) It's time to think about a walk last April on Cockatoo Island in Sydney Harbour. In colonial times it has been a convict prison, a major shipbuilding dock, a naval dock and is now a park.
Walked 6.8 km on the Island, from a 19th century prison to a 20th century shipyard.

New York

Nov 14/17. Two days and an evening in the city plus a morning on the E-train - in New York. The best walking city. No record of how many km walked but it was substantial.

Breslau

November 4th., 17 kilometres to walk from the Waterloo hotel in downtown Waterloo to the Region of Waterloo International Airport, via the Kitchener/Waterloo art Gallery. Through Breslau as well, a little shortcut.

Waterloo

November 4th in the cafe at the Waterloo Hotel. Bacon, eggs, potatoes, toast and coffee. I've walked 94.18 km since last post. It's been a while since I last posted though. Walking in Waterloo from the Waterloo hotel to the University of Waterloo. Great walk along Erb road past the Clay and Glass Museum and the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics, then along the train tracks, through the park and then cutting through the strip malls to the Art building on the U Waterloo Campus. Weather has been great, cool enough for comfortable strolling. I'm going to walk into Kitchener to the Kitchener/Waterloo Art Gallery and then on to the Airport for my flight late this afternoon. Should be about 16 km.

Lewis and Clark

October 19, following the Lewis and Clark trail in Helena Montana. Did the entire route in less than a kilometre. Interesting interpretive plaque quoting Meriwether Lewis stating (paraphrased): despite all the hardships including "caring for Sacagawea" (or "the Indian woman"), no man complains, all go cheerfully on. Interesting summation of the relationship of men to women and landscape.
Walked 27.5km since last entry, a little better.

Tracking

26.86 km since the 11th. Walked in the coulee with D and S on the weekend. Lovely fall day. Drove out to Pavan Park and walked up the Old Man River for a ways. Retraced the same route looking for car keys. Unsuccessfully. Waited to be rescued by C after finding a cell phone signal and calling for help.

Walked 24.1 km since last post. Not much. Work is getting in the way of work, or rather work is getting in the way of Work. Oklahoma City was a very pleasant virtual walk, hot and scenic. I did a short walk in Calgary last week, but spent most of the time on a ladder staring at a mouldy ceiling.
The walk from the parking lot to the university presents surprises sometimes. Last week the apparently disembodied head of a male mule deer with a nice set of antlers was munching on long grass beside the pathway as we passed. Optical illusion of course, it was standing on a steep hillside with only its head showing, and bounded away as we approached.

I've only walked 27.63 km since the last post, mostly in hallways.
Today I'm thinking of walking in Oklahoma City, a place I've been only once before. At that time we drove around the city looking for a water pump for an old Hyundai Pony, a car that no one in America had heard of. So we couldn't find the right part and had to fill up the radiator with barsleaks, a kind of cooling system glue, and hope that the water pump didn't blow up till we reached Houston. We never did find the part in the US and eventually when I had to fly back to Canada, I bought one at Canadian Tire and mailed it back to Houston. No walking was involved in that visit to Oklahoma City. I now have to imagine strolling the streets of a place I can only remember as the interiors of numerous radiator shops and auto parts sales outlets.
